I'm so glad that I ordered the Lamb Shank for dinner last night. It was so amazing! It was so much better than prime rib. Spiros prepares the lamb through a 2-day process. So, it's slow cooked and so tender that it practically falls right off the bone. It was so tender and so different from anything that I had ever had. I suppose I was expecting something dry and tough in lamb. That is completely not the case. The waiter said that rack of lamb is more steak-like. But, lamb shank is awesome in taste and texture! It did come on the bone, so it made eating it a tad bit messy, and it took a long time to eat (at least for me). So, make sure you have time to fully enjoy if you get a dish like this.
Also, lamb is quite lean. The Daily Plate website, sites 3 oz of lamb shank at 153 calories, 5.7g fat, and 24g protein (http://www.thedailyplate.com/nutrition-calories/food/generic/lamb-shank-trim-fat-roasted).
I probably had about 4oz of meat overall. I'm not sure how much meat came out on the plate. It was on the bone, and I wound up leaving a lot of the skin and any visible fat. So, there was quite a bit of mess left on my plate when I was finished (plus the big bone). It was a lot like eating a big chicken drumstick (although the taste was different from chicken).
I had a glass of the Greek red wine with my dinner. A bit of research on the net showed me that lamb was typically best paired with a full-bodied red. So, that's what I went with. It was an excellent pairing, and I would get it again next time. I now have a new favorite dish from Spiros! Lamb Shank is amazing.
